Beyond Lockdown is a critical first step in improving crisis response and survivability in violent incidents.

Who should take the course?
Beyond Lockdown is an appropriate course for any school stakeholder – such as teachers, administrators, and support staff.
I’ve never done an online course before. Will that be a problem?
The instructional platform for the Beyond Lockdown course Ashland University’s Angel system. It is very user friendly and easy to access. Before you begin the class itself, you will be walked through a step by step tutorial on using the various Angel features. IT support and answers are always available through both ESSN at Avin@eschoolsafety.org or Ashland IT at 1.866.434.5222 or visit https://myau.ashland.edu/Technology/TechSupportCenter/pages/default.aspx
What does on-demand mean?
On-demand means that the course modules are available to you whenever you are ready to complete them. The registration process takes a few days, but after you receive your Angel user name and password, you can begin the course immediately.
When can I take the course and how will it fit into my already busy schedule?
The beauty of online, on demand courses is the convenience it affords. There are no face to face or synchronous meetings. The course content is organized into modules, with videos and reflection activities for each. You complete the modules at your own pace with course completion within the semester window. For the spring 2014 session, the course content will open on January 6, 2014 and must be completed by June 30, 2014.
What is the time commitment for this course?
If you are taking the course for CEU credit, there are 5 contact hours required. For one hour of graduate credit, additional assignments and requirements bring the total hours to 15.
Can I get CEU credit for this course?
After successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate for .5 CEUs.
What’s the difference between taking the course for CEU credit versus graduate credit?
The lectures and activities for Beyond Lockdown are the same whether you take the course for graduate or participation credit. There are simply two sections – one for participation credit, and one for graduate credit. The difference is in the number of contact hours required. Participation credit requires 5 contact hours. Graduate credit is 15 contact hours, requiring the completion of an additional project assignment.
If you select the participation credit option, after you have finished the 5 contact hours, you will receive a certificate of completion which is the equivalent of .5 CEUs. No letter grades will be given, rather a Pass or Fail will be assigned. The awarding of licensure or other credits may vary from state to state or district to district. Please verify these requirements with your local provider or organization.
If you are taking the course for 1 graduate hour of credit, additional assignments are required to increase the total contact hours to 15. After the successful completion of the course and accompanying assignments, a letter grade will be issued. Credit will be awarded through Ashland University in Ohio. Why must I sign the Beyond Lockdown disclaimer before I begin the course?
The Beyond Lockdown course is an awareness level exploration of the many issues involved in responding to crisis events. It is not intended or designed to be a “train the trainer” course. After completing the course, you will have a much better understanding of the whys and hows of enhancing lockdown procedures, but you will not be qualified to train other staff members. We ask for the disclaimer signature to protect all the parties involved. We want to make sure that districts and individuals understand the limitations of the training and that no individual is put in the position of having to conduct training or other inappropriate safety responsibilities as a result of taking the course to increase their personal and professional safety knowledge.
How long does it take after I register before I can access the course?
If you are taking the course for graduate credit, instant enrollment should allow you to access the Angel instructional platform with 48 hours. You will receive an email with your log in and password to begin the course. If you are taking the course for participation credit, this process takes a day or two longer. You will receive an email directly from ESSN with your login and password with 3-4 days.
You already spoke about lockdown enhancements at the school where I work-should I take the online course?
It depends. We are constantly updating our courses, but if your attended a lockdown enhancement training in person recently, you might find some of the material to be repetitive. Please contact us to discuss.
